The sunny spring weather and the shimmering white snow inspire to go outside and try out different winter sports. Spending time outdoors in the nature is an important part of winter holiday season for many of us. Whether you are into speed or looking for a calmer experience you will find something interesting to do, as wintertime is filled with options when it comes to different sports and activities.
If you are into snowboarding, we recommend trying out powder surfing (also known as pow surfing or snowsurf)! The board used in powder surfing is a combination of surf and snow board, but without bindings. The key principle of powder surfing is that you need to “earn your turns” which means you have to first climb to the place where you start to surf down. Here are some key tips to get you started:
- The board? You can rent boards for powder surfing in some ski resorts or equipment rental stores. To play it safe, it might be a good idea to check the availability of the boards before your trip.
- Where? To succeed in powder surfing, you need to find a downhill with soft powder snow, for example a small hill in a forest. Just keep in mind snow safety and consider the risk of avalanche when looking for the perfect spot. The type of snow matters how well the board performs, therefore avoid icy slopes and hard packed snow.
Other things to consider:
- Wear winter boots which are warm and water-resistant, for example Sorel boots.
- Like any other sport, powder surfing can be challenging in the beginning – give it time!
If powder surfing sounds too exciting, here are few recommendations from Superyellow’s team:
- Try skinbased skis! Also known as sliding snowshoes, with them you can move around dense forest areas even in deep snow.
- Tour skating on natural ice! Put on skates and enjoy the beautiful lake views.
- Start ice swimming! A dip in a freezing water refreshes both your body and mind.
